Today while looking through a large flock of 100 to 200 redpolls in Centre County PA, my eye was drawn to a redpoll that was larger and darker streaked than all the nearby redpolls. Dark redpolls from Iceland were almost indistinguishable from rostrata, but their average biometry was different from the pale birds breeding on the same island. Pale birds from Iceland are Species Detail - Greenland Redpoll (Carduelis flammea subsp. rostrata) - Species information displayed is based on the dataset "Birds of Ireland". Even in flight, the warm colours are noticeable. They are overall brown-tinged with heavy streaking on the upperparts and underparts. The rump is white, but heavily dark streaked.

Rostrata redpoll

There’s also the “Greater” Common Redpoll, also known as the “rostrata” subspecies, which is endemic to Greenland. It is sometimes referred to the Common Redpoll (large-billed). This redpoll has a darker plumage and is the larger of the two. It breeds mainly in Greenland.

I thought it was so cool to see this subspecies "Greenland/Greater" Common Redpoll (rostrata/icelandica) in a tree foraging on the Japanese Black Pine cones. In the last photo, you can see the seed in its bill. All the common Redpolls I have seen this year have been feeding on birches or weed seeds. Photos were taken at the NH coast

These small finches of the arctic tundra and boreal forest migrate erratically, and they occasionally show up in large numbers as far south as the central U.S. During such irruption years Dependent from posture and the condition of the individual. Highly variable character within and amongst the different (sub)species. Broad (yellowish) brown band running from sides of breast to rear flank, quite diffusely bordered on a whitish undertone.

The pale phenotype from Iceland is the most distinct redpoll on that island, and might deserve a new name; the name islandica should be restricted to the dark, rostrata-like birds. The third type is the 'Greenland Redpoll' (C. rostrata), which is another winter visitor and is larger than the Common Redpoll and darker than the Lesser Redpoll. The final type is the Arctic Redpoll ( C. hornemanni ), which is a rare vagrant from Greenland and Lapland and is slightly larger than the 'Greenland Redpoll' and has a white rump and underparts. Common/Mealy Redpoll Acanthis flammea (Linnaeus 1758) Appearance: Brown and white birds with heavily streaked sides.

18 Nov 2013 Southern Common Redpoll (flammea); Greater Common Redpoll (rostrata); Southern Hoary Redpoll (exilipes); Hornemann's Hoary Redpoll

Broad (yellowish) brown band running from sides of breast to rear flank, quite diffusely bordered on a whitish undertone. Always heavily streaked dark, even down to the rear flanks. The form rostrata (‘Greenland Redpoll’) breeds in southern Greenland and on Baffin Island and is strongly migratory, prone to periodic irruptions southwest into eastern Canada and the northeastern United States and southeast to Iceland, Scotland and Ireland. All birds are large and dark with streaked rumps.

Plumage colouration and extent of dark streaking on the upper and under-parts very similar to Lesser Redpoll, but mantle and scapulars a paler buff/brown, so less tawny than seen on Lesser. Greenland Redpoll (rostrata) These birds are characterized by their dark chocolate brown appearance. Even in flight, the warm colours are noticeable.
